Moudros, Limnos

Moudros lies on the eastern side of Limnos, a village on the bay of the same name — the largest and safest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, centered on the settlement of Koukonisi, where excavations uncovered a prehistoric center just as significant as Poliochni.

In 1912, during the Balkan Wars, Admiral Kountouriotis made Moudros Bay a base for the Greek fleet. During World War I, it served as the headquarters of the British military command, with thousands of soldiers stationed here and piers built for Allied ships. In 1918, the Armistice of Moudros was signed here between the Allies and Turkey.

A walk through the village reveals the stone-built primary school, the Church of the Taxiarches (1835), and the Church of Evangelistria (1903). In recent years, Moudros has seen tourism growth, now offering shops, cafés, a pharmacy, a rural medical clinic, ATMs, and a post office.

Enjoy a stroll along the harbor for a meal at the fish taverns, admire the boats at the new marina, or — in summer — catch a cultural event or concert. And don't forget to capture the sunset.
